Devon’s pioneering environmental charity Proper Job marked its 30th anniversary in true grassroots style with a vibrant celebration in Chagford on 14 June. The event brought together many community members to honour three decades of dedicated work promoting the values of reduce, reuse and recycle.
Founded in 1995, Proper Job has long been a trailblazer in the UK’s circular economy movement. It was among the first environmental reuse charities in the country, rescuing tonnes of reusable goods from landfill and offering them to the public at affordable prices through its Chagford-based Reuse Centre. Over the years, the organisation has grown into a hub for sustainable living in Devon, delivering hands-on workshops, education programmes, and outreach initiatives that have inspired individuals and communities to take practical action for the environment.
The anniversary celebration perfectly captured the charity’s joyful, inclusive ethos. Attendees enjoyed a cake-cutting ceremony, live music, energetic junk drumming, and free food and drink for all. Children crafted with upcycled materials, while local residents shared stories of Proper Job’s impact over the years, with some going back to its earliest days.
“We were overwhelmed by the turnout and love from the community,” said Alison Sallis, CEO of Proper Job. “It was a day of celebration, gratitude, and inspiration as we look ahead to the next 30 years of environmental action. Proper Job truly belongs to our community.”
A special guest at the event was Sheena Wynne, Head of Regional Funding at the National Lottery Community Fund, whose attendance highlighted the national significance of Proper Job’s grassroots efforts.
“Proper Job is demonstrating how simple, everyday interventions can have a huge impact on our environment—engaging people in environmental action and helping to build stronger, more sustainable communities,” said Sheena Wynne.
From its modest beginnings as a small reuse shop in rural Devon, Proper Job has become a model of community resilience and sustainability. Its workshops have covered everything from furniture restoration to sewing and composting, and its Reuse Centre is now a well-loved destination for environmentally conscious shoppers and DIY enthusiasts across the region.
Looking forward, Proper Job promises a year packed with events and initiatives, continuing its anniversary celebrations with upcoming highlights like the Chagford Music Day and a community fashion show, both designed to celebrate creativity, reuse and human connection.
The charity is also committed to expanding its environmental impact, ensuring that its work continues to inspire future generations.
