A public consultation has been launched by Okehampton College amid a decline in sixth form applications, with just nine students applying for the 2025/26 academic year.
The college said several factors are being considered, including changes in local demographics, availability of alternative education providers, and shifting student preferences.
A spokesperson for Okehampton College told The Moorlander: "The decision to begin a consultation reflects a range of factors impacting the education sector, including local demographic trends, post-16 student numbers, and the availability of high-quality alternative post-16 education providers in the area. Since 2021, we have noticed a general downward trend in numbers of students enrolled in our Sixth Form year on year resulting in just nine applications for the September 2025/26 cohort.
"The ongoing consultation was launched in response to the reality we are facing locally and more generally within the education sector. We are committed to exploring all options to ensure any decision made is in the best interests of the students and community we serve so we can continue providing the highest quality educational experience for all local children."
Recent reports have suggested that the reinstatement of the rail service between Okehampton and Exeter in November 2021 may be a contributing factor in the declining sixth form intake.
The rail line reopened to passenger services for the first time in over 50 years, making it easier for students to access Exeter-based colleges.
Exeter College, which has long attracted students from across the region, offers a wider range of A-levels and technical qualifications.
In a statement, the college said: "At Exeter College, we believe in supporting student choice. We work really closely with our partner schools and recognise our Ofsted Outstanding academic and technical offer has always drawn students from across our region. We meet all young people applying to us in person so we can ensure the college and their chosen course is right for them. We always run a GCSE results advice phone line from results day for anyone needing support or guidance."
No decision has yet been made on the future of Okehampton College’s sixth form provision.
The consultation remains open, with the college stating it will continue to engage with stakeholders to find the best outcome for students and the wider community.
