The future of Okehampton College’s sixth form remains uncertain after a decision to change the school’s age range has been postponed until December 2025.
The move follows an in-depth consultation with parents, carers, students and members of the wider community, which has prompted the school to give itself more time to increase pupil recruitment for its 2026 Year 12 intake.

More than 50 written contributions were received during the consultation process.
A public consultation evening was also held, alongside a parent and student survey and discussions with key local stakeholders to gather a wide range of views.
Following a review of the feedback, the college’s trustees and leadership team have agreed to delay any changes to the current age range.
In the months ahead, the school will intensify its efforts to promote the sixth form’s academic, vocational and enrichment offer in the hope of boosting enrolment numbers for the 2026 cohort.
Marketing campaigns will be shaped by feedback received during the consultation and aim to attract more students to ensure the sixth form remains viable.
Principal Gareth Smith said: “We are extremely grateful to everyone who took part in the consultation. The level of engagement from our school community has been thoughtful, constructive, and deeply valued.
“In light of this, and in recognition of the strong support for our sixth form offering, we believe it is right to allow more time to demonstrate the value and appeal of our post-16 provision.”
He added: “We can only deliver sixth form provision if it is viable to do so, as the government funding is based on pupil numbers. We’re proud of the high-quality education our sixth form provides and hope more families will consider choosing Okehampton College as their preferred post-16 destination.”
A final decision on whether to formally change the school’s age range is expected to be made by Trustees in December 2025.
