Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra’s top group, DYJO1, has been invited to perform at the Music for Youth Prom at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 11 November.
The concert will be a highlight for the orchestra on its 50th anniversary year.
The Music for Youth Proms is an annual event that brings together some of the best young musicians from across the UK.
Ensembles of all styles and backgrounds are chosen to perform at one of the world’s most famous concert venues, The Royal Albert Hall in London.

DYJO are one of several county ensembles supported by the Devon Music Education Hub, led by Devon County Council, which provides music opportunities for young people across the county.
Brian Moore, who has co-led DYJO for more than 20 years alongside director Graham Hutton, said playing at the Royal Albert Hall is a special experience. “DYJO has played at the Schools Proms twice before and for the players it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said.
“Walking onto that stage, being treated like professionals, and performing alongside other brilliant young musicians is unforgettable. It also shows the calibre of young musicians in Devon.”
Lewis Gibbs, who leads the Devon Music Education Hub, said the invitation was national recognition for the group. “We’re proud of DYJO and thrilled to see them perform at such a prestigious venue in their 50th year,” he said. “It reflects the talent and commitment of the young people involved, and it is a celebration for music education in Devon.”
Councillor Julian Brazil, leader of Devon County Council and cabinet member for education services, said the achievement highlights the value of music education. “It enriches young people’s lives, helps them connect with others, and can lead to fulfilling careers,” he said. “This is also a testament to the hard work of teachers, staff, and volunteers who make these opportunities possible.”
