As Tavistock returns to its usual rhythm following another busy Goose Fair, Tavistock Town Council has paid tribute to the team behind the scenes who make one of West Devon’s best-loved traditions possible each year.

Goose Fair, which draws thousands of visitors to the town every October, takes months of planning and coordination.

From installing signage and barriers to managing road closures and keeping visitors safe, the Council’s Works Department and stewards play a vital role in ensuring the event runs smoothly.

In a post on social media, the Town Council said its Works Team and stewards are “the friendly faces making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.”

It also thanked the “brilliant volunteers and emergency services” who support the event each year, adding that their “teamwork and dedication help make Goose Fair such a safe and enjoyable day for everyone.”

Kev Willcocks, a member of the Tavistock Town Council team, described his experienced of the day to The Moorlander:

"It was an extremely busy day, and our team had to put in a real shift in the late evening and morning before, but seeing everything come together makes it worth it".

The Council also marked a special milestone this year, as it said farewell to Ian Lashbrook, who retired last week after more than 40 years of service with Tavistock Town Council.

Ian has been part of countless community projects and events over the decades and is regarded as a cornerstone of the team.

The Council’s Works Manager said:

“Over the years Ian has made a significant contribution to the local community and has become a familiar face to many. It has been a pleasure working with Ian and he certainly will be missed within our team.”

In its online statement, Tavistock Town Council added:

“Goose Fair might be just one day a year, but keeping it safe and enjoyable for everyone takes months of planning, and a huge effort from Tavistock Town Council’s amazing Works Team and Stewards.”

When the fair ends each year, staff and contractors begin the clean-up immediately, often working late into the night to return the town centre to normal by Thursday morning.

The Council extended its thanks to all those involved in delivering this year’s event, saying their efforts ensure that Tavistock’s historic Goose Fair “continues to thrive safely for future generations.”
