A Christmas tractor run organised by Tavistock AFC brought crowds out across the town last Friday night (December 12).

According to club spokesperson Eric Pinch, this year's event was the biggest yet.

“This Xmas Floodlit tractor run had a record number of participants. Sixty-seven tractors in all shapes and sizes gathered at Tavistock’s Langsford Park,” he said.

The football club organised the event alongside tractor run organiser Eion Ellacott.

Eion led the parade, towing a trailer carrying adults, while mobile public address operator John Collacott followed, playing Christmas carols along the route.

Another tractor and trailer completed the convoy.

The route travelled through Plymouth Road, Tiddy Brook, Whitchurch, past the Golf Club, Down Road, the Square, Courtlands, the Hospital, West Street, Russell Street, the Square again, Old Exeter Road, through Kelly College, and back via Plymouth Road and the Crowndale to the club.

Large crowds lined the streets throughout the evening, and Mr Pinch said there were especially big gatherings near Whitchurch Post Office and towards the Golf Club.

“The Square was full on each of the three occasions the convoy came through,” he said.

While the tractors were out on the roads, the Tavistock Youth Choir performed at the football club to what organisers described as an appreciative audience.

The prize for Best Decorated Tractor was awarded to Graham Northey, assisted by his partner Sandra.

A raffle was also held on the night, with many prizes donated by supporters.

Eric added thanks to committee members, bar staff, club volunteers, the Lions of Tavistock for helping with car parking at the school, Kelly College for allowing access through its grounds, and the tractor drivers and members of the public.

“They all helped make this a truly memorable night,” he said.

Club representative Tony Dwelly also praised those involved. “Tavistock Football Club would like to thank the amazing tractors that turned out Friday night to make it such a success,” he said.

“They were all amazing, but there could only be one winner and that was Graham Northey.”

He gave special thanks to Eion Ellacott for his experience, John Collacott on music and announcements, Darren and John on the barbecue, Jim and Sam serving teas, road guides, back-room staff at the club, and collectors out on the streets.

“I know I have missed people out, but this is a massive thank you to you all,” he said.
