A community choir in Tavistock that began with just two dozen members is preparing to celebrate its second anniversary after seeing its numbers triple in size.
The Tavistock Warblers, founded in 2024 by former West End actress Alison Moyna, has grown from 24 to more than 70 singers in just 24 months.
The group will mark the milestone with a charity gala on Saturday, 21 March, to raise funds for the Devon Air Ambulance.
The choir has become a staple of the local music scene, performing at the Tavi Fringe Festival, The Robey Trust Vintage Fair, and at National Trust properties including Buckland Abbey and Cotehele.
Speaking about the group’s growth, Alison Moyna said: “The future is looking very bright and exciting for The Tavistock Warblers, with many different opportunities on the horizon.”
The choir is open to all abilities, with members taking part in uplifting rehearsals featuring a wide range of songs.
Ms Moyna noted that the impact of the group extends beyond the music.
“My favourite memory from the past two years would be seeing the joy on all the Warblers faces when we perform together. Also watching the beautiful friendships that have formed between members, that would have never met if it wasn’t for The
Tavistock Warblers,” she said.
The upcoming anniversary event will feature a live performance, a raffle, and a disco, with all proceeds going to the Devon Air Ambulance.
The charity was chosen due to its vital role in the local community.
“We chose Devon Air Ambulance because they do such valuable work in the area, also a few members have been helped by Devon Air Ambulance, we are delighted to be fundraising for them!” said Ms Moyna.
The group has a strong track record of local support; last year, the choir raised £1,125 for Tavistock Area Support Services (TASS) during their one-year anniversary celebration.
Tickets for this year’s event are on sale now for £10. Those interested in more information can contact Alison Moyna at alisonmoyna@aol.com.
