Central Devon MP Sir Mel Stride has paid tribute to fallen servicemen on behalf of an Okehampton veteran, as he also visits the town's Royal British Legion branch

Central Devon MP Sir Mel Stride has planted a Remembrance cross in the House of Commons Garden of Remembrance on behalf of Warrant Officer Watson from Okehampton.

The cross was planted in memory of two of Warrant Officer Watson’s good friends, Paul Barker, who was killed in action during the Falklands War in 1982, and Sergeant Vince Phillips, who lost his life during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

Each year, MPs plant crosses in the garden on behalf of constituents to remember members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in service.

“It was a privilege to plant this cross on behalf of Warrant Officer Watson,” Sir Mel said.

“Behind every name is a family, a regiment and friends who still carry their memory. We will remember them.”

The Conservative MP also recently visited the Okehampton branch of the Royal British Legion ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

During the visit, he met members of the branch and thanked them for their work supporting veterans and their families.

Bob Tolley, manager of the Okehampton branch, said the visit had provided an opportunity to explain the organisation’s work in the town.

“Mel’s visit today was a great chance to get to know the Okehampton organisation and what we do for local residents and veterans. It was also productive in getting to know how we operate as a charity,” he said.

“We look forward to a continued relationship with Mel going forward.”

Sir Mel said the Legion’s work continued throughout the year, rather than being limited to the Remembrance period.

“It is always special to visit the Royal British Legion. They do so much to support our veterans and their families,” he added.

“At this time of year our thoughts turn to Remembrance. But the Legion’s support for veterans and their families is not just for November. It is there all year round, and that is what makes it so valuable to our Armed Forces community.”

Sir Mel is due to join Okehampton’s Remembrance service this Sunday (November 8).
