South Devon railway station update reveals reopening plan after fire disruption

Paignton railway station is expected to reopen for branch line services next week, subject to final safety work being completed, following the fire that caused significant damage and disrupted rail services across South Devon
A South Devon railway station is expected to reopen next week following the major fire that badly damaged part of the station building.
Great Western Railway (GWR) said it is working to restore services to Paignton, although access to parts of the station will remain restricted while Network Rail continues repairs.
If the work is completed as planned, branch line services between Newton Abbot and Paignton are expected to resume from the station during the week.
A GWR spokesperson said: "We are working towards reopening Paignton station next week, subject to completing the work required to make the station safe for passengers and staff.
“Significant progress has been made but there remains more to do. This includes ensuring all new temporary facilities meet disability access requirements and that updated fire safety and evacuation plans, and signage are in place.
"We are sorry for the disruption this week's fire has caused to passengers and the local community and we thank customers for their patience.
“We are also grateful to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police, British Transport Police and Torbay Council for their support.
"In the meantime, long-distance services continue to start and terminate at Exeter St Davids or Newton Abbot, with the branch line operating to and from Torquay, and a road replacement service running between Torquay and Paignton. Customers are advised to check gwr.com for the latest travel information before travelling."
The update comes after The Moorlander previously reported how a major fire swept through part of the station building on Tuesday.
Firefighters from across Devon, including crews from Newton Abbot, tackled the blaze, which caused significant damage to the station.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus worked in difficult conditions to bring the fire under control and prevent it spreading to nearby structures.
Following the fire, British Transport Police arrested three boys, aged 13, 15 and 16, on suspicion of arson.
They were later released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
Passengers are advised to continue checking the latest travel information before setting out while repair work continues and temporary arrangements are put in place.
