Training night for Oke Ladies
The women’s rugby season kicks-off for Okehampton RFC Ladies on Sunday, and all in the backdrop of a thrilling Women’s World Cup being played in England.
First up for the Okes is a trip to Avonmouth Ladies in the Women’s NC 1 South West Division on Sunday, September 21 before they then welcome Dings Crusaders for the first home league game on October 5.
Women’s rugby has been on the rise in recent years and the new experiences are being felt all across the Okehampton club.
One fine example of the next generation sampling the excitement of this growing game was Darcy Tee from the Okes’ Girls U16 team, who was selected to be a ball girl in the World Cup quarter-final at Sandy Park in Exeter.
Training has been in full swing for Oke Ladies, including a guest appearance from two French players, who are in Devon as supporters of the France national team, who will take on England for a place in the World Cup Final on Saturday.
New Okehampton RFC President Lloyd Thomas penned the following welcome to herald the excitement of a new season.
“Firstly, I would like to thank our outgoing President Jerry Ovens, and applaud him on the fine work he has put into the Club.
“It is an honour and privilege to be elected as Club President, something I never imagined when I joined, some 45 years ago, also humbling to follow in my father’s footsteps. “Here at O.R.F.C. we thrive, thanks to our Players and Coaches, the dedication of our Committee and Volunteers and the generosity of our Sponsors and Supporters. You are all an essential part of what makes our Club special.
“Last Season saw our 1st Team finish Mid table, with 10 wins on the bounce, at times it looked like we may have a top three finish, with some notable displays. With a new coaching structure in place this season, and our youngsters gaining experience every game, we have a solid platform to build on.
“The Ladies Season speaks for itself, amazing league and Cup double, with lots of entertaining Rugby played. As an all-round team, their performances have been immeasurable, speed and agility in the backs, with the forwards a cohesive unit feeding them.
“Our Colts and Youth teams remain strong and are our bloodline to successful Rugby.
“Let us re-establish the Showground as a fortress and take no Prisoners. Keep the Maroon and Amber blood flowing.”
