The Met Office has issued warnings as Storm Goretti is set to affect parts of the UK on Thursday, January 8, bringing strong winds and heavy snow.

Storm Goretti is a named European windstorm, part of the 2025–26 storm season.

Strong winds associated with Storm Goretti may lead to some disruption on Thursday.

Named storms are identified by meteorological agencies, including the Met Office, when they are forecast to cause potential disruption, helping authorities, media, and the public track and respond to the weather.

Across southern and coastal areas, strong winds may cause damage to buildings, with tiles and other materials potentially blown from roofs. This affects part of North Devon, Dartmoor, South Devon and Cornwall.

Road, rail, air, and ferry services could experience delays or cancellations.

There is also a slight risk of power cuts affecting homes and mobile networks. Coastal communities are advised to take care due to large waves and flying debris.

In Wales, Somerset, and the Midlands, heavy snow is expected, which may make travel difficult. Some rural communities could become cut off, and there may be delays or cancellations on roads and public transport. Power cuts may also occur.

The Met Office has described the likelihood of these events as small to slight, but residents and travellers are advised to stay informed, secure loose items, and follow local safety guidance.
