The Ilfracombe Academy has marked Children’s Mental Health Week 2026, joining schools across the country in promoting the wellbeing of children and young people.
The annual event, which ran from 9 to 11 February, focused on this year’s theme, “This is My Place”, emphasising the importance of belonging and feeling connected. Schools and communities were encouraged to consider how their environments can support positive mental health, inclusion and safety.
At Ilfracombe Academy, students took part in a series of activities, including a launch assembly for Years 7 to 10, tutor-time reflection sessions on anti-bullying and mental health, and lessons within the PCRE curriculum. Pupils were also invited to apply for the school’s new Mental Health and Anti-Bullying Ambassador Programme, which will train students to promote wellbeing, support peers and foster an inclusive school environment from September 2026.
Ambassadors will help raise awareness of mental health, act as positive role models, support school campaigns, and encourage kindness and respect among fellow students. The programme will be led by PCRE teacher Mrs Vale, with support from Safeguarding Lead Mrs Tilley.
The week reflected the school’s broader approach to wellbeing, including its Relationships, Sex and Health Education curriculum, which teaches students about common mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, the benefits of physical activity and outdoor time, and the value of community involvement.
Children’s Mental Health Week was launched in 2015 to give children a voice and highlight the importance of early support. Research shows around one in five children experience mental health challenges, making schools a key part of helping young people build resilience.
Headteacher Steve Rogers said: "Children’s Mental Health Week is an important opportunity to encourage open and honest conversations about emotions and wellbeing. By taking part, we want our students to feel connected, supported and confident in understanding their own mental health, and to know that The Ilfracombe Academy is a place where they belong."
