Okehampton's own Wren Music charity is extending a helping hand to local families this winter with the launch of the Okehampton Musical Warm Bank.
Opening its doors several afternoons a week from 2.30pm to 6pm at Wren Music's premises in Ebenezer Hall on North Street, this initiative is set to hit all the right notes in aiding families during the coldest months.
Supported by the National Grid Electricity Distribution Community Matters Fund, the Bank not only offers a cosy space for people to stay warm but also provides a refuge for creative expression. With the option to enjoy a hot drink and partake in musical and creative activities, this initiative aims to assist families, especially those with young children, in managing their fuel costs during the winter.
It welcomes visitors on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons, along with select Sundays, until the end of March. Marilyn Tucker, Creative Director at Wren Music, said: "People can drop in, have a chat, have a cuppa, and recharge their phones. If they like, they can have a go at playing an instrument when our musicians are here and join in with activities."
Wren Music, marking its 40th anniversary in 2023, is well-known for its diverse projects, including collaborations with schools and care homes and the coordination of the Okehampton Lanterns Procession, set to take place on Saturday February 24.
The Community Matters Fund grant has played a pivotal role in expanding the charity's offerings, particularly with the introduction of the free musical warm bank for local families.
Marilyn expressed gratitude to the National Grid Electricity Distribution for their support, emphasising the impact on the local community. "Living in a rural area – especially near Dartmoor – means members of our community often rely on tourism and have lower wages in winter, coupled with fewer places and spaces available to spend time. By providing a free musical warm bank, we are hoping to make this winter easier and more fun for local families. It’s giving folks the chance to try new things and meet new people, as well as save on heating bills."
