Plymouth woman finds passion in photography amid health challenges

Shirl doing what she loves best!

A Plymouth woman has discovered a newfound joy in her photography work after overcoming major health challenges.

Shirley Brown, 57, who was born in Hounslow, started exploring her passion for photography after struggling with a lack of confidence and turning to the support of counselling sessions.

Initially finding solace in trails riding, a form of motorcycling sport, Shirley began capturing images from bike events on her phone.

However, it wasn't until 2022 when she received a camera as a gift that her passion was truly ignited.

She continued to photograph trials riders and caught the attention of Trails GB Magazine, who expressed an interest in publishing her work.

Despite lingering doubts about her abilities, Shirley’s perspective shifted dramatically after a life-threatening health scare in September 2022 left her hospitalised for seven weeks.

She emerged from the experience with renewed determination after months spent rebuilding her strength and alongside continued counselling.

Realising the fleeting nature of life, Shirley decided to embrace her talent for photography wholeheartedly.

She began advertising her services on social media platforms, eventually landing her first wedding photography commission at the end of 2023, an experience she thoroughly enjoyed.

Shirley said photography has become a lifeline for her, providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

She said: “I thought, ‘okay, maybe I am pretty good at taking photos,’ and I thought life is so short.”

Despite her previous doubts, she successfully completed a 10-week photography course in September of the same year, a milestone she once thought unattainable.

Now, Shirley is focused on expanding her photography business, Shirl’s Photography, with a growing number of bookings for weddings and various other shoots.
For her, capturing moments of joy and love at weddings is particularly fulfilling.

Shirley also aims to inspire others to confront their own struggles and emerge stronger.

Through her journey, she hopes to convey the message that with determination and self-reflection, people can overcome any obstacle and find fulfilment in their passions.

She told The Moorlander: “I want to show people you can overcome anything if you deal with your demons.”

She has now created her own website www.shirlsphotos.com to showcase her work around Devon.
