West Devon Borough Council has announced a bold initiative, pledging an investment of £50,000 to help local communities deliver more new affordable homes.
The council revealed that the West Devon Housing Offer, set to launch this May, aims to confront some of the Borough’s most pressing housing challenges by facilitating collaboration between landowners and communities to explore potential sites.
In partnership with a development partner, this initiative seeks to transform these prospects into real housing solutions.
Under this comprehensive housing strategy, the council will extend financial support and practical guidance to assist in the formation of community housing groups and the identification of housing needs.
Moreover, established groups will receive assistance in locating suitable sites and pre-planning advice, ensuring a streamlined pathway to realising affordable housing projects.
In line with the council's commitment to combat climate change, the initiative will prioritise the delivery of energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable homes, reflecting a broader vision for sustainable development.
Councillor Mark Renders, Lead Member for Housing at West Devon Borough Council said: “We know there are communities and landowners here in West Devon who, like us, want to do all they can to help tackle the housing crisis."
Mr Renders also highlighted a recent collaboration with Chagford Community Land Trust and Aster Group, resulting in the delivery of 28 new affordable homes at Bellacouch Meadows in 2019.
"The new development in Princetown is a great example of how we are working with partners to build homes where there is much need, and more communities out there can really use our help," Mr Renders added.
The Council's stance is further evidenced by its latest partnership with Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) to construct 10 new affordable homes at Hessery View, Princetown. DNPA has committed £173,000 to this joint housing project, leveraging both its own resources and council land.
Commenting on the collaboration with DNPA, Mr Renders said: “We want to put our efforts in where our biggest housing challenges lie. By supporting communities to deliver new lower cost homes, we can make the greatest difference to our residents."
