Lloyd (far right) hangs up his wig and retires from panto
The Moorland Merrymakers are bidding farewell to one of their longest-standing stars as Lloyd Mortimore, the beloved performer best known for playing the Dame, prepares to hang up his wig and retire after 50 years on stage.
Best known for his role as the Dame in the group’s annual pantomimes, Lloyd has been a key figure in productions at Leusdon Memorial Hall, where the Moorland Merrymakers have performed for decades. This year’s production of Treasure Island will mark his final appearance.
Peter Smerdon, a fellow performer, said: “I've known Lloyd for around 50 years, starting from our time with Young Farmers Clubs. That’s where his love of acting came from, taking part in the annual drama or entertainments competition which is still going strong.
“He's been a member of the Moorland Merrymakers panto and drama group for most of that time. The group was founded by the late great Tony Beard, the Wag from Widecombe.
“The group are currently showing their version of Treasure Island at the tiny Leusdon village hall, a quintessential Dartmoor venue in the middle of nowhere surrounded by gorse, yet such is the fun the productions always sell out.
“Lloyd has anchored these productions for many years by playing the Dame, hamming it up and mercilessly taking the mickey out of anyone he recognises; all in the best of taste, of course!
“Lloyd and I are the same age and face a significant birthday next year. It’s now becoming general knowledge that he intends to hang up his wig after this year’s panto, after 50 years onstage.
“I just feel that such a commitment to both panto tradition and his local area should get some recognition. Needless to say, he doesn’t know I’m writing this!”
Chairman Robert Steemson also commented on Lloyd’s contribution to the group: “Lloyd is a great friend and throughout the majority of his 50 great years we have shared many sketches and laughs. He has the ability and skill to think quickly on his feet, and has the audience eating out of his hands, bringing in many local jokes and ad-lib stuff.
“He has predominantly been the Dame but occasionally he has undertaken other roles, endeavouring on humour whenever possible.”
The Moorland Merrymakers, founded by Tony Beard, include around 60 members involved in all aspects of the productions, from casting and scenery to electrics and refreshments.
This year’s panto season began on 7 December and ran until 14 December, with seven performances of Treasure Island.
All 700 tickets were sold out by the end of November.
Leusdon Memorial Hall, located above the village of Poundsgate, has been home to the Moorland Merrymakers’ pantos for years.
Despite its rural setting, the productions consistently draw sold-out crowds, attracting audiences from across Dartmoor.
Lloyd’s decision to retire marks the end of an era for the group and its audiences, with his contributions fondly remembered by performers and residents alike.
