As winter illnesses, including flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), spread across Devon, the NHS is urging everyone to take simple steps to protect their health. Emergency department attendances are rising as the flu virus circulates widely.
Get vaccinated
The NHS recommends that everyone eligible, especially the elderly, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing health conditions, get vaccinated for flu and COVID-19.Dr. Peter Collins, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Devon, said: “No one wants their festive plans derailed by a bout of norovirus or flu. Take simple steps to reduce your risk of infections – including taking up all the vaccines you may be eligible for.”
School-aged children from reception to year 11 are also eligible for free flu vaccines. These are administered through schools or at catch-up clinics for those who missed the school vaccine.
Practice good hygiene
Norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, is circulating at higher levels this year. Handwashing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds and using bleach-based products to clean surfaces are effective ways to stop the spread.
If you're sick, avoid preparing food for others and stay home for 48 hours after symptoms stop.
Stay home if you’re unwell
If you have respiratory symptoms or feel unwell, avoid social gatherings and close contact with vulnerable individuals.
Dr. Collins advised: “It’s vital that those who need medical help come forward as they usually would – using 999 and A&E for life-threatening emergencies and 111 online for everything else.”
Prepare for cold weather
The Met Office has issued a cold weather warning for early January. Ensure indoor temperatures stay at least 18°C, particularly if you’re older or have young children.
When outside, wear warm clothing.
The NHS in Devon continues to ask for public cooperation to ease hospital pressures.
“Staff in our Devon hospitals are working hard to treat people quickly and safely,” Dr. Collins added. “Please choose the right service for your needs.”
For minor injuries, use NHS 111 online or visit a pharmacy. For more information on services and health advice, visit the NHS website.
