Coombeshead Academy in Newton Abbot, part of the Education South West Trust, is excited to announce the launch of its Level 2 CREATE course, a groundbreaking programme designed to inspire and support students interested in art and design. Starting in September 2025, this course aims to provide a creative and academic foundation for students preparing to pursue careers or further education in the arts.

The Level 2 CREATE course is specially tailored for students who may not yet be ready to embark on Level 3 qualifications, such as A-Levels. Open to students with at least five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, the course bridges the gap between GCSEs and higher education, offering a practical and supportive environment to nurture creative potential.

Students will benefit from a combination of hands-on artistic exploration and a study skills programme, equipping them with the tools to tackle future academic challenges. The curriculum spans a diverse range of disciplines, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, and graphics.

The course will be led by experienced art educators Emily Parr and Tracey Williams, who bring their expertise in 3D design and textiles, respectively. Their goal is to guide students in refining their artistic talents and building confidence in their abilities.

Helen Coulson, Headteacher at Coombeshead Academy, said: "We are thrilled to launch the Level 2 CREATE course, which provides an essential foundation for students who have a passion for creativity. By offering this bespoke pathway, we aim to prepare them for future academic challenges and help unlock their full potential in the creative industries."

This initiative demonstrates Coombeshead Academy’s commitment to providing a supportive and inspiring environment for students, ensuring they have access to opportunities that help them progress with their passions and career aspirations.

The new programme aligns with Education South West’s mission to nurture talent and encourage innovation across its network of schools. The Trust oversees eight primary schools, four secondary schools, one all-through school, and a University Technical College, all located in Devon.

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West, said: "The Level 2 CREATE course is a vital step in our commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists and designers. This course will provide students with the chance to develop their talents in a supportive environment, setting them up for success in further education or careers in the arts. It’s fantastic to see Coombeshead Academy continue to innovate and provide such valuable opportunities for young people."

All schools within Education South West hold UNICEF Rights Respecting accreditation, proving their commitment to creating safe, inspiring learning environments where children’s talents are nurtured, and they are empowered to thrive.
