Lustleigh, often dubbed the prettiest village on the moors by locals and various news outlets, will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its traditional May Day festival on Saturday, 3 May.

Revived in 1905 by antiquarian Cecil Torr, Lustleigh’s May Day has become one of the most popular and enduring celebrations in the UK.

The event, which marks the start of summer, attracts large crowds from across Devon and beyond.

The festivities will begin at 1pm with a procession featuring the children of the village and the crowning of the May Queen.

The procession will include traditional songs, folk music, a welcome from the Town Crier, and a blessing from the Rector, before heading to The Orchard for maypole dancing.

The afternoon will feature morris dancing, live music, fairground stalls, face painting, and cream teas.

Lustleigh’s May Day has long been a community tradition, celebrating the season and bringing together people of all ages.

This year’s May Queen will be Eve Whitehead, who has participated in the celebrations since childhood.

“May Day really brings the village together and I am thrilled to be this year’s May Queen,” she said.

The event is free to attend, with a £5 parking charge.

The Wray Valley Trail provides access from Bovey Tracey or Moretonhampstead.

Lustleigh’s May Day festivities start at 1pm on Saturday 3 May.
