Pennon Group is rapidly transforming its environmental legacy, earning high-profile international recognition for its commitment to sustainability, carbon reduction, and green innovation. The company has been named one of Europe’s Climate Leaders 2025 by the Financial Times and Statista — ranking 6th overall among 600 businesses across the continent.
The prestigious annual report identifies companies leading the way in climate action, assessing progress on verified Science Based Targets, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and transparency in disclosing Scope 3 emissions from supply chains.
This marks a milestone in Pennon’s journey from ambition to delivery, reflecting its shift toward long-term environmental resilience and operational decarbonisation.
Susan Davy, Chief Executive Officer of Pennon, said:
"We’re investing in more than just infrastructure, we’re investing in people, in nature, and in the future of the communities we serve.
Recognition from CDP and the Financial Times shows the scale of the progress we’ve made, but it’s our teams on the ground turning those ambitions into action every single day. Whether it’s cutting emissions, restoring nature or delivering resilient networks, we’re focused on long-term impact and we’re just getting started."
Complementing the Financial Times recognition, Pennon also achieved its highest-ever ratings from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), securing A- ratings in both Climate Change and Water Security, a notable rise from B- ratings just one year ago. CDP’s scores are considered a gold standard for environmental transparency, widely used by investors and stakeholders to assess corporate risk and performance.
The improved scores are the result of deliberate and measurable efforts made across the business, including emissions cuts, nature-based solutions, and resilience planning.
Pennon has made major strides in reducing emissions and advancing renewable energy use as part of its roadmap to Net Zero operational emissions.
70% reduction in Scope 2 emissions since 2021
On track to exceed 13% renewable energy generation in 2025
Aims to reach 50% self-generation by 2030 through its clean energy arm, Pennon Power
Over 100,000 trees planted, already surpassing its initial goal on the way to 250,000
These initiatives signal a significant evolution in Pennon’s role from a regulated utility to a sustainability leader that is actively shaping a low-carbon future.
Operating in a traditionally high-impact sector, Pennon’s progress stands out as a model of proactive, science-based action. Its focus on decarbonisation, biodiversity, and water security addresses both regulatory expectations and broader societal needs.
From its South West roots, where it serves communities through South West Water and other services, Pennon is now helping to set the benchmark for environmental performance across Europe.
With international recognition from both CDP and the Financial Times, Pennon’s actions offer proof that sustainable transformation is possible and that measurable progress, when backed by ambition and investment, can lead to long-term environmental and societal benefits.
