Glorious day at Widecombe Fair for Uncle Tom Cobbley and all

It was a glorious day at Widecombe Fair as thousands of people and their dogs attended this famous event in the heart of Dartmoor.

It wasn’t too muddy either considering that the previous day it rained heavily all day. Tom Cobley and his old grey mare paraded through the village and the showground and at one point roped in Johnny Rutherford of BBC Spotlight.

Judging of the sheep and cattle got underway early in the day, then followed the sheep dog trials, vintage cars and tractors, terrier racing and the Dartmoor Hill Pony Display Team.

Music was played all day in the busy Rugglestone
Inn with Geoff Lakeman, father of Seth and Sean, headlining. Town Criers from all over Devon were to be seen in the village. Wendy Beard launched her book ‘Hello there’ co-written by Sue Viccars from Dartmoor Magazine about her late husband Tony Beard the ‘Bard of Dartmoor’.

School children in the village start term a day early so they can attend Widecombe Fair. The trade stalls and stands seemed to do really well
in the sunshine. Widecombe Fair, set in this picturesque part of Dartmoor, must be one of the most memorable events each year.
