A long-awaited community centre for Sherford has been given planning permission, with local councillors announcing the news on social media today.

A new community centre for Sherford has been given the go-ahead by planners.

South Hams district councillors Julie Carson and Alison Nix took to social media today to reveal that South Hams District Council had given the go-ahead to plans for a permanent local centre, a decision that was made by planners on June 5, as stated on South Hams District Council’s website.

In their update, the councillors said: "Sherford local centre update. SHDC have granted permission for the local centre at Sherford. This is a major milestone for the project."

The approved plans, submitted by Vistry Cornwall South West, are for four buildings located to the east and west of School Square. The development will include 15 one-bedroom apartments, 25 two-bedroom apartments, four retail spaces and a nursery, totalling 14,215 sq ft, along with highways, drainage, landscaping and a substation.

The site sits on either side of School Square, with frontages onto Hercules Road, referred to as Main Street for planning purposes, close to Sherford Vale School and the allocated secondary school site, which currently houses a temporary community hub, coffee shop and community shop.

However, residents hoping for an immediate start may need to be patient. The councillors warned that build contracts would need to be completed before work can begin on site.

"Cllr Nix and Carson intend to meet with the consortium shortly to ensure this comes forward as soon as possible," they said. "We will update timescales when we know more."

The approval marks a significant moment for Sherford, one of the largest new communities being built in the South West, which has long awaited a permanent local centre for its residents.
