Tough lessons for Tavi at table-topping Yate

Early goal condemns Tavistock to defeat

Tavistock are sat precariously above the relegation places in Division One South of the Southern League after a 2-0 defeat at league leaders Yate Town on the weekend.

The Lambs suffered a nightmare start in South Gloucestershire, falling behind in the opening minute when Ollie Dewsbury scrambled the ball home on the rebound after his initial header had been blocked.

Tavistock slowly recovered their composure and began to ask some questions at the other end, with Luke Steer particularly prominent, but Yate also remained a constant threat. The game was ultimately decided on the hour, Dewsbury expertly finishing for his second of the day.

While the frustration was understandable for Tavi manager Stuart Henderson, it was another step in the learning curve for his young team.

“It was so frustrating that we conceded within a minute,” said Henderson. “The ball was 80 yards from our goal and within six seconds, it was in the back of the net. We were caught cold and that’s not the started we wanted when coming to the leaders.

“In fairness to the boys, the goal obviously rocked us, but the shape was good and I don’t recall them opening us up too many times. They have more experience than us and three or four players who have played in the Football League but we kept our shape and discipline.

“What frustrated me was the moments of quality. Once or twice, we nicked the ball and stray passing gives it straight back to them. The players we have are young and they’re learning, it is really fine details in a tough and unforgiving league.

“All the games are important and this month is Saturday-midweek all the way through. We’ve also got a big FA Trophy game on the weekend and the boys aren’t a million miles away. They are learning on the job and I’m proud of their attitude.”

Before that FA Trophy visit from Winchester City, the Lambs have a home midweek clash with bottom club Shaftesbury, when all three points could lift Henderson’s men into a position of relative security in mid-table. All to play for at Langsford Park.
