More Morley misery for the Grecians
For the second time in the space of just four days, a bloke called Morley inflicted a painful last-minute defeat on Exeter City in Sky Bet League One.
A dubious penalty from Aaron Morley condemned the Grecians to a 2-1 loss at Wycombe on New Year’s Day and the situation was repeated in even more dramatic fashion by Bolton Wanderers at St James Park.
Exeter were in a strong position when Demetri Mitchell pounced on a defensive error to calmly steer the ball into the empty net on 54 minutes and the Grecians were seemingly cruising to a welcome three points.
The mood changed dramatically two minutes from time when a sloppy back header from Jack Fitzwater allowed Aaron Collins to squeeze the ball past a stranded Joe Whitworth in the Exeter goal.
Incredibly for Morley and Exeter, the same man who had delivered NYD pain repeated the trick, having been recalled from his loan stint at Wycombe by parent club Bolton.
This time, rather than a dodgy penalty, Morley delivered the brutal late winner with a deep cross that evaded everyone to nestle in the corner of the net.
City must regroup quickly for the visit of Oxford United in the FA Cup next weekend.
