Grecians fall short at home to Welsh high-fliers
Exeter City were unable to extend their unbeaten sequence to seven games after being undone by a powerful Wrexham unit chasing a third successive promotion.
The Grecians have found form at the right time, pulling clear off the League One danger zone, but the Welsh visitors were a step up in class and deserved to travel home with all three points.
Wrexham controlled the early stages of the game and it felt like a case of when, not if, they would score the opening goal. That moment arrived on 23 minutes, when a fizzing strike from Ollie Rathbone flicked off a home head to give City goalkeeper Joe Whitworth no chance.
The Grecians responded in positive fashion, Alex Hartridge and Joel Colwill both going close, but there was an assurance about the visitors, despite City’s improved tempo. The game was ultimately decided by a second on the hour.
A scruffy challenge from Jack McMillan saw the referee point to the spot and Jay Rodriguez displayed all his experience in calmly firing the spot-kick down the middle to confirm three points for his team.
