Wild celebrations for Reece Cole. Pic from PPAUK
Exeter City latest from Club President Julian Tagg
Fresh from our 2-1 victory over Bristol Rovers, we’ve passed the magical 50 points. It’s a total which is generally considered to be safety for League One, but I’d prefer that to be absolutely nailed on and it looks like it will come down to the last couple of matches.
Reece Cole (again olé, olé) made it two in two when he scored an absolute stunner of a goal to seal the victory against Rovers on Saturday and the post-match celebrations with the 1,300+ travelling fans from him and the rest of the team were something to behold!
Coming up, we have the Easter weekend when those final positions should become a little clearer. Tickets are selling fast for our game this week against Burton, who have a lot to play for - but let’s hope we make it a very ‘Good Friday’ for Exeter City!
It’s also the ‘Kids in Charge’ day – which is always a lot of fun. From media to management there will be a youngster in charge, I’m sure there was even mini Taggy one year who turned up in a Range Rover!
Following that, it’s away to Crawley, again another team with a lot to play for, on Easter Monday, which is followed by Huddersfield at home on April 26 and our final match of the season, away at Mansfield on May 3.
After that the players and staff get a well-deserved break, but not before they and the women’s team have been celebrated at the end of season awards, which this year takes place on the pitch at SJP. Surely the most glamorous night of the year in the Exeter social calendar, get your glad rags on and join us!
And the Exeter City Women have plenty to celebrate. They were promoted last year and have had an amazing season. Although they lost at the weekend, they are still placed a very respectable fourth in the Women’s National League Premier Division South.
They are back at SJP on Sunday April 27 – so get your tickets and help us pack out the Park for this final game of the season for them.
Over at the Academy it’s business as usual with some of the youngsters getting a taste for overseas travel, as our under 13s and 15s are visiting Greece to compete in the Elite Neon Cup. It’s a fantastic experience for them and yet another example of the things the Academy does so well in developing the footballers of tomorrow.
The team from our partner charity, Exeter City Community Trust are busy preparing for their flagship Exeter Live Better Marathon, which takes place on May 11. They’re also staging a Community Five Mile event the same day. Come along and take part, it’s always a brilliant atmosphere and fantastic to run alongside the River Exe.
Back to the football, after a very well-earned break, it won’t be long before the players are back to training, and all being well, preparing for our fourth season in League One, which is just an incredible achievement by everyone involved with the club.
Of course, the team on the pitch and Gary’s management team are responsible for the matchday results. But there’s everyone behind the scenes who work so hard, week in week out.
This year there have been more matches than ever at SJP, which puts additional pressure on the small matchday team, so thank you to them, the staff at the Cliff Hill and the amazing volunteers, who give their time so willingly.
And of course, thanks to you all – our supporters, who bring the noise to every game, home and away. You are the lifeblood, the heartbeat (or should that be drumbeat?) of our club, and we are grateful to every one of you who spends their hard-earned cash to support the team.
We’re all part of a very special club, with a unique ownership model and proud to be doing things differently in the crazy world of football. But we couldn’t do it without you – Up the City!
