Celebrations for Plymouth Argyle after victory at Cambridge

Plymouth Argyle claimed a memorable 3-2 victory away at Cambridge United, handing the U’s only their second league defeat of the season in a pulsating encounter.

The Pilgrims showed their attacking quality and resilience to secure all three points, surviving a late Cambridge fightback to record an important away win.

Argyle threatened to break the deadlock midway through the first half, only to be denied by an inspired Jake Eastwood. The Cambridge goalkeeper first pushed away Harvey White’s free-kick before producing an excellent reaction save to keep out Will Evans’ header.

However, the visitors’ pressure eventually paid off four minutes before the interval. Xavier Amaechi delivered a dangerous corner into the box, and Louis Appere inadvertently headed the ball into his own net to give Plymouth the lead.

Argyle made the perfect start to the second half, doubling their advantage five minutes after the restart. White found space outside the penalty area and unleashed a shot towards goal, with Eastwood unable to keep out the effort through a crowd of players.

Cambridge responded seven minutes later to reignite the contest. Liam Bennett’s cross found its way through the Plymouth defence to Sulay Kaikai at the back post, where the forward finished to reduce the deficit.

The home side sensed an opportunity and piled on the pressure, forcing Argyle to defend deep as they searched for a third goal to restore their two-goal cushion.

That crucial breakthrough arrived in the 74th minute. Eastwood brought down Evans inside the penalty area, allowing Bim Pepple to step up and convert from the spot to make it 3-1.

Yet Cambridge refused to surrender, and the closing stages proved anything but comfortable for the visitors. With four minutes remaining, Shayne Lavery continued his impressive scoring run by finding the net for the third consecutive game, setting up a nervy finale.

Argyle were forced to withstand one final onslaught, with Cambridge pushing desperately for an equaliser. In the last minute, Murphy Cooper produced a vital save to deny Bennett and preserve the Pilgrims’ advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a hard-earned 3-2 victory for Plymouth, who combined clinical finishing with determination to withstand Cambridge’s late rally.

For Argyle, the result represents a significant away-day success against a side that has proved difficult to beat in the league this season. Despite allowing their two-goal cushion to come under threat, the Pilgrims showed enough composure to leave Cambridge with all three points.
