The charity auction, held at the White Hart Inn, raised £4,600 for NEDCare, which provides more than 1,000 hours of care each month to people across North East Dartmoor.

A charity auction in Moretonhampstead has raised £4,600 for NEDCare, the care provider that supports people across North East Dartmoor and helps them to stay in their own homes.

Supporters braved stormy weather to attend the fundraiser at the White Hart Inn on Thursday, October 22, according to a press release. Auctioneer Mike Hilditch encouraged generous bidding on donated lots including local food experiences, cases of wine, local art, wildlife experiences and 20 bags of well-rotted manure.

Devon County Councillor Ed Tyldesley, who is also the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Central Devon, attended the evening and thanked everyone involved.

He said: “What a wonderful demonstration of our community’s generosity. Huge congratulations to NEDCare’s team, trustees, and supporters, to Mike for keeping the bids coming, and to everyone who donated a lot or dug deep on the night. The White Hart team deserve enormous thanks for their hospitality and hard work.”

NEDCare was established in 2016 in response to a shortage of local care. It now provides more than 1,000 hours of care each month, according to the release. Its support ranges from help around the home to personal care and sensitive care at the end of life, shaped around each individual’s wishes.

Mr Tyldesley said: “NEDCare represents the very best of community care: skilled, compassionate people helping their neighbours live with dignity, independence and choice.

“Registered Manager Jane Tilsley, Deputy Manager Rebecca Cruse, Chloé Beal and the whole caring and support team deserve tremendous recognition. Behind every visit are people building trust, offering reassurance and making daily life better. Their contribution to our rural communities is immense.”

Mr Tyldesley, who sits on the Devon County Council Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee, also called for national reform of social care funding, arguing that the dedication of local charities should be matched by lasting government support.

He said: “I want to see social care nationalised through a properly funded national care service, with central government taking responsibility for funding and lifting the financial burden from local councils.

“Access to care should depend on your needs, wherever you live. We must end the postcode lottery and ensure rural communities receive the support they deserve.

“That service should build on the expertise and local relationships of organisations such as NEDCare, giving excellent teams the dependable resources they need.

“Fundraising evenings bring people together and deserve our wholehearted support. Government must match that generosity with a fair, secure system of care.

“NEDCare’s team already show us what compassionate care can look like. They deserve our thanks, our support and a national commitment equal to their own.”
