Okehampton District Round Table is supporting volunteer Matt Retter after he was seriously injured while running near Hatherleigh, leaving him unable to work

A fundraising appeal has been launched to support an Okehampton District Round Table volunteer who suffered life-changing injuries in a hit-and-run collision just one week after getting married.

Matt Retter, 41, was running near his home in the Hatherleigh area last Thursday (3 September), when the collision happened near Venton Cross and Church Lane.

Matt suffered serious injuries in the collision and is now facing a long period of recovery and rehabilitation.

An electrician by trade, Matt is currently unable to work, adding financial pressure to the physical and emotional impact of his injuries.

Okehampton District Round Table has launched a JustGiving appeal to support Matt and Sarah through the months ahead.

The group said Matt has volunteered with its Christmas Santa Sleigh for several years, helping bring Santa to communities around the area.

He has also supported the local carnival and annual tar barrel, while in 2013 he was part of a team which kayaked around the South West, raising more than £12,500 for charity.

Chris Brown-Martin, from Okehampton District Round Table, said: “Matt has spent years giving his time to help other people and our local community. He’s been one of those people who will simply turn up and get stuck in when you need him.

“Seeing what Matt and Sarah are going through, particularly just a week after getting married, is heartbreaking.

“Matt has helped us put smiles on so many people’s faces over the years. Now it’s our turn to stand behind him and Sarah.

“We hope people will donate whatever they can, but even just sharing the appeal can make a huge difference.”

A target of £4,000 has been sent for the fundraising page which, at the time of publication, had raised £1,605 from 60 supporters.

The page says the money will help with the loss of income and everyday expenses, as well as rehabilitation, specialist care, equipment or other support Matt may need.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that a 43-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the collision.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident, driving while unfit through drugs and driving without insurance.

He has been released on police bail, and the collision remains the subject of an active police investigation.

The fundraising appeal can be found via this link “Help Matt & Sarah rebuild their lives” on the JustGiving website.
